Ransomware trends Victorian business owners should know

Our straight-talking view on a problem we see every week.

Insight

The headlines make ransomware sound exotic. In practice it follows the same script every time.

A laptop screen locked behind a red encryption warning
A layer of protection between your business and an attack.

The points that matter

  • It usually starts with one phishing email.
  • Untested backups are the difference between a bad day and a disaster.
  • Multi-factor authentication stops the majority of account takeovers.

Our view

The pattern has barely changed in years: a phishing email, an untested backup, and a decision made under pressure. Assume an email will eventually get clicked and design for that day — survivability, not perfection, is the goal.

The bottom line

You cannot stop every phishing email, but you can make an attack survivable. Immutable, tested backups are the single most cost-effective insurance any small business can buy.

What actually stops an attack becoming a disaster

Two things: multi-factor authentication on every account, and an offline backup you have tested. The first blocks most stolen-password logins; the second means encryption cannot hold your data to ransom. Layered on top, current endpoint protection and a quarterly phishing exercise remove the rest of the low-hanging fruit. None of it requires a large security team.
